Open House to the Past

Do you love popping in on Open Houses just for the fun of it?

On a brisk walk around the point in Newport with my sister a few weeks ago,  we passed by an open house being held at a 1920’s home in the neighborhood.

She happened to know the realtor and even though we weren't in the market for a house, and it definitely wasn’t in our price point ($$$), we both LOVE old houses and jumped at the chance!

What a treasure!

Sure a potential buyer would have a different point of view and might be thinking, “This is all outdated!  Look at all the work that needs to be done!  Floors are beat … more wallpaper?!” Oh, and “Ugh, what’s that smell?”

But all we were thinking was, “Wow, this is dated.  How cool that it hasn’t been touched in so long!  Look at those parquet floors and this wallpaper is all fabulous!”  Oh and also, “Ugh, what’s that smell?”

This house was a time capsule containing architectural and design elements from the 1920s to the 1970s (yep, and pretty much stopped there!). You can clearly see this in the wallpaper samples below … but this is what I love!

“Crossing Thresholds to The Past” is about stepping into an architectural “time capsule” and experiencing a moment in history that has long gone.

While this was not a well-restored historical house museum, the connection I felt to the past was just as strong when I was within its walls. And maybe even more authentic.

So while part of my mission is supporting historic homes and locations … I also appreciate the hidden gems I might encounter on a brisk walk around the block with my sister.
